The book, Southern Seed, Northern Soil, African American Farm Communities in the Midwest, 1765-1900, by Stephen A. Vincent, Indiana University Press, 1999. has been an invaluable asset in constructing our genealogy of the Roberts family. The book tells the story of the migration of several free, mixed-race families from the south to the midwest. We are the direct descendants of that group, documentation beginning with the purchase in 1765 of a 100 acre farm in Northampton County, NC, by James Roberts. James was the son af a free African servant and a Native American woman (undocumented), the progenitor of the Roberts clan. This story will unfold elsewhere on this site.
